What to Do When Your Dishwasher is Not Draining Completely

Your dishwasher refuses to drain completely, water pools at the bottom and has even started to smell. Not only is it a health hazard (rotting food particles can give you an upset stomach or worse) it also makes your kitchen stink. There are 2 reasons for dishwashers not draining completely:

Food and other debris may be blocking the drainage basket that is in the far back of the tub.

The same materials may be blocking the drain hose that runs under the sink.

When your dishwasher doesn’t drain properly, there is no need to call in the cavalry, at least not until it is a real emergency. There are several simple DIY cures that you can try yourself with minimum trouble.

Start by clearing your garbage disposal. The water from your dishwasher travels through your garbage disposal on its way out. It is quite likely that there is something in your garbage disposal that is keeping all the water from draining. You will notice that the water drains very slowly and not all of it leaves the tub of the dishwasher. Clearing out your garbage disposal is easy. Just get some ice cubes, put them in and run the disposal. You can follow it with some apple cider vinegar to get rid of residual smells.

If that doesn’t work, you should try cleaning your air gap. This is a space on the counter next to the tap that stops water from the kitchen sink from getting into the dishwasher. When there is food or other debris there your dishwasher will not drain completely. To clear the gap, all you need to do is remove the cap and clean any debris that you see.

It could be that the drains from your dishwasher are clogged. You can clear them out with a simple process. You will only need vinegar, baking and hot water. Mix the vinegar with the hot baking soda and pour it in the basket. Let it sit for 15 or 20 minutes and then pour in the hot water. If there was any debris in the drains it will wash away and your dishwasher will also smell fresh.

To avoid your dishwasher getting clogged, you should make a point of cleaning the basket at the back on a regular basis. It will get rid of any debris that may clog things. In addition to that, make sure to clean your garbage disposal as well. This should keep your garbage disposal running well.
