Kitchenaid Built In Fridge Ice Dispenser Not Working? The Auger Motor Is the Culprit

icedispenser

Imagine going back 100 plus years to the old refrigeration technology. Back then you didn’t have the convenience and

luxury of ice and water dispenser on your freezer refrigerator door. I don’t even think there was such a term as a

“built-in refrigerator”. Some might argue, that the refrigerators back then, were made much better than the ones today.

Let me throw in a little trivia before I continue:

Did you know that the old school refrigerators, that had to be manually defrost kept food fresher longer than the newer models

of today? Today’s fancy built-in refrigerators are defrosted by an electronic device called a defrost bimetal that causes the refrigerator to lose temp. faster during the defrost cycle.

So, let me get back on track about your Kitchenaid built-in refrigerator( model #kss048qtx02)  not dispensing ice or cold water for that matter. you purchased this fancy refrigerator, with ice and water dispenser on the door, beautiful lighting and sound effects on the freezer door.

You can even send a text message from one of these things… no kidding! I went to a Dacor cooking and baking product meeting last week and the featured product had it’s own app in the app store. You are able to preheat your oven from your smart phone.

You casually walk over to your Kitchenaid built-in fridge and place a glass under the sprout and push the lever…. whoa…wait a minute.

Nothing comes out. No ice, or water. Oh-my-god what are you going to do? the world is coming to an end.

Forget about tap water and old school ice trays. You can’t believe your eyes, so you push the lever once again.

The culprit is your ice-maker auger motor.                                                 augermotor

Solution:

Open freezer door, just under the upper bin rack you will see 2 1/4 inch screws.

Firstly, before you do that, you would want to remove the ice bucket assembly. This could be difficult, as it might be frozen tight.

The auger motor shaft could be rusty as well, making the ice-bucket assembly, even more difficult.

Here are the parts and part numbers to complete this repair.
